Hazel Avenue is an essential north-south transportation corridor connecting Highway 50 with communities in eastern Sacramento County. Growing travel demand along the corridor created congestion and operational challenges that required significant roadway improvements.

To improve traffic flow and mobility, Sacramento County completed major upgrades along approximately two miles of Hazel Avenue between Highway 50 and Madison Avenue through three separate construction phases.

The $86.5 million project included approximately $50.7 million in taxpayer-approved Measure A funding, representing nearly 59% of the total project cost.

 

Key Project Features:

• Expanded roadway capacity: Increased Hazel Avenue from four to six lanes between Madison Avenue and Gold Country Boulevard.
• Widened American River Bridge: Enlarged the bridge to accommodate six lanes of traffic and improve a key connection across the American River.
• Intersections: Modified signalized intersections to improve turning movements and traffic operations.
• Added bicycle and pedestrian improvements: Built bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and improved connections to the American River Parkway.

Completed in 2022, the Hazel Avenue Improvement demonstrates how Measure A helps Sacramento County address congestion by investing in local arterial corridors to expand roadway capacity, improve traffic operations and safety, and create a more reliable connection for people driving, walking, and biking through eastern Sacramento County.
